Duon är nu komplett
Den 17:e februari släpps Highland Park Fire Edition 15 Years på systembolaget och intresset kring denna release är stort. Fire är en specialutgåva som kompletterar förra årets release, Ice edition. Denna duo är en egen exklusiv serie från Highland Park som berättar vikingalegenden om skapandet av världen ur is och dess undergång från eld. Jag satte mig ned med Martin Markvardsen, Senior Brand Ambassador för Highland Park, för att ta reda på mer om duon och särskilt Fire edition. Martin är verkligen kunnig och det märks att han älskar sitt jobb och att berätta. Jag har inte översatt intervjun så hoppas att ni står ut med att texten är på engelska. Intervju med Martin Markvardsen
How did it come that you did the Ice and Fire edition and what is the story behind them?
We did the Valhalla range with Thor, Loki, Freyja and Odin. And to follow that, it wasn’t 
easy to find stories, because when you have had Odin the allfather, what could possibly follow him? But there was this story about the creation of the world, with ice and the destruction of the world with fire. We thought this story was quite good and doable. Fire is the story about Muspelheim and the fire giant Surt with his burning sword and how he destroyed the world and made Ragnarök.
What can you tell us about the liquid?
With Ice we wanted the liquid to be more fresh than normal and we did that with first fill bourbon casks. And with Fire we used port wine casks, which is the first-time Highland Park have used port wine casks. They give us this spiciness, this fiery feeling but it also gives us a lot of ruby fruity flavors which is quite unique. It’s a tone of tasting and nose you won’t get from sherry casks.
Are they more complementing than colliding?
Definitely complementing, they bring the story together not only by words but also by the liquid. It gives a feeling about why we chose bourbon casks for Ice and port wood casks for Fire and kind of give you an idea of what we mean with the story. So it means a lot to taste them side by side, as it did with the four Valhalla’s. I think people get a better feeling for it side by side than just one by one.
What have the reception been so far with the Fire edition?
When we have toured the whisky fairs so far with Fire, the response people have given us have been awesome, absolutely amazing. Although some people have said ‘it’s only 45,2%’, but that’s the strength we decided it was best at. You know it’s easy to just put it in at full strength and let people decide. But some whiskies are not good at full strength, some whiskies need to be taken down a bit. And that’s what we did here to find the ideal drinking strength to create this complexity and that’s what people really likes here.
As with Ice, this has quite a special packaging and bottle
Yes, I think it works and it is brave because it stands out and it is something we [Highland Park] like to do. We like to be a bit brave and innovative at the same time, both with the liquid and the packaging. But then at the same time we like to be very traditional in our production with floor malting and those kinds of things. These two things combined, I think that is what people like and of course the story we tell.
It’s a fine walk between the two
It is a very fine balance and a thin line that we cannot cross on either side but I think that we have succeeded and will succeed in the future. Because what we plan to do in the next two years will, in my opinion, be some of the best things we have done in, well, the whole period of Highland Park.
Now that is a good tease about the future [of Highland Park]
Yeah I think but cannot say too much yet. Of course we will continue the single cask program for a few years and that’s kind of lifting it up for whisky consumers in general. These two here [Ice & Fire] is mainly, of course, directed towards collectors and Highland Park consumers but we also know that it works as a bit of a recruitment ramp as people taste it. So we are quite happy about them.

Vad tycker jag då
Jag anser att Fire är ett rejält kliv upp från Ice både i kvalitet och smak. 15 år på portvinsfat har gjort whiskyn gott och bjuder på en lite annorlunda upplevelse som jag uppskattar. Jag håller med Martin om att det är modigt att designa utgåvor så som man gjort med Ice och Fire. Det faller inte alla i smaken men syns det gör de och det blir lätt en konversation runt dem.
Priset på 1999kr är högt då det går att köpa så mycket annan whisky för den summan. Portvinslagringen spelar en inte obetydlig roll i whiskyn och avskyr man portvin så kanske man ska avstå helt och håller. Men älskar man Highland Park så är det överkomligt och utgör en pärla i samlingen. Njuter man lika mycket av en 12 årig HP som en bra blended så är Fire absolut inget man behöver lägga pengarna på. Prissättningen på whisky fortsätter uppåt tillsammans med efterfrågan och det är synd för det går den mindre tillgänglig.
När jag smakade Fire första gången så var det den fjärde whiskyn i ordningen och i en miljö som var lätt fylld av rök från öppen eld. Som ni kanske anar så öppnade doften aldrig upp sig för mig även om smaken var riktigt bra. Edrington var dock snälla och skickade ett sample för att jag skulle kunna prova den hemma också. Visst är det skillnad på provningstillfälle och nedan är mina taste notes.
Taste notes
Doft: Highland park är i glaset och då är det som vanligt ljung med i näsan. Den är söt och omslingras av röken från Orkney. Kanelkryddade ugnsbakta röda äpplen med en klick riktigt smör. Sammanfattat så är det svårt att missa influenserna från portvinet och fatet. En viss bitterhet finns där också som går att koppla till väldigt mörk choklad.
Smak: Den följer doften tydligt och avspeglar kvalitet. Den är komplex och har en sötma jag gillar som så småningom rullar bakåt för en, för en gångs skull, god bitterhet. Fattonerna är starkare här än i doften vilket gör den varm och lite torr i smak.
Avslut: Den värmer riktigt gott till en början men det lägger sig relativt fort. Dock ligger det kvar toner av choklad och vanilj en god stund efteråt.
Sammanfattning: Om du så bara gillar portvin en liten aning så är Fire en riktigt trevlig whisky. Om du vill köpa en på bolaget så spår jag att det gäller att hänga låset vid release.
Officiella taste notes
DOFT: Livliga och intensiva dofter av rubinröda frukter och varm vanilj kompletteras av en eldighet från kanelstänger och rika dofter av mörk choklad.
SMAK: FIRE Edition bjuder på en lätt rökighet med tydliga toner av torkade citrusskal och vanilj följt av en kryddighet och noter av plommon.
AVSLUT: Intensiv
