Gammal Highland Park är ett kärt ämne. Många klassar ju exempelvis den 18-åriga som världens bästa all-around whisky inklusive jag själv. Men vad händer efter 18? Jag personligen tycker ju att den 18-åriga slår både 21:an och 25:an. Så den 30-åriga då? Den är precis som en äldre Highland Park kännetecknar: träet har börjat göra sitt och sätter en viss beskhet i smaken. Jag gillar det men kan samtidigt förstå att det inte tilltalar alla och ska jag vara ärligt ska det inte vara så här mycket beskhet – då ska man plocka den tidigare. Men jag är ju inte den som är den – jag älskar den såklart!
Yes, that is very fair, and a good comment. I have a lot of whiskies, but very few are 30 years old. I have a HP 30 yo bought from a few years ago. It is a magnificent brooding hulk of a beast, definitely more refined, and a little greyer of the temple now, but a great acquaintance to make. But I digress – enough about me – and back to the whisky! I too find that there is some ”oakiness” in this HP 30 which is just at the point of becoming woody and bitter. It is still a great sherry bomb all the same.
It’s a rare thing to find an older whisky (30+) without the wooden bitterness, but once in a while you stumble over such masterpieces, like the Bunnahabhain 39 from Cadenhead that we tried at the Stockholm Beer and whisky Festival a couple of weeks ago!
